“One of the Wise Men gave his son, Basil, a heart-shaped ruby for his birthday. The boy was so delighted with this precious gift that he wore it everywhere and bragged to all that his
father loved him so much that he gave him a heart.
Soon after that two other Wise Men, called the Magi, arrive to discuss a strangely bright star in the western sky (remember they were east of Jerusalem at the time). They believe the star
is a herald of an important person’s birth and decide to follow the star. Basil begs to go with them, but both his father and mother say it’s too dangerous and he must stay at home.
But Basil is determined to go, and stows away in one of the baskets slung from a camel’s saddle.
“Now Basil had ridden on camels before and was quite used to their strange gate where both feet on one side move forward together, then those on the other side move together.
This causes a rocking motion from side to side. Riding in the saddle, one gets used to moving with the gate. But in a basket, slung over the camel’s back, the side to side motion means Basil’s
head smacks against the camel on every other step! Oh, it didn’t take long for Basil to be very sorry he’d decided to stow away!
“Just outside of Bethlehem, as the caravan halted for the night, Basil snuck out of his basket to try and find something to eat – and geys caught by one of the other Wise Men!
“Well they were at the end of their journey, so Basil’s father allows him to visit the “Baby who will change the lives of the people forever.”
“When they arrive, the three Wise Men each give the baby a gift, one gold, another Frankincense, and his father a flask of Myrrh. Then Basil’s father pushes him forward to stand before
the little child.
“Basil is in tears as he bends over the child, beginning to explain how he stowed away because he was determined to come and see this baby. The ruby heart falls out of his robe and
the baby reaches for it. Immediately Basil takes off the necklace and gives his heart to Jesus.
“And you can do that too, you know? You can give your heart to Jesus right now. Today. Would you like to do that?”
